Step-by-Step: Video Cloud Studio Publishing Workflow

In this topic you will work through a basic video publishing workflow using Video Cloud Studio. This topic provides a set of hands on steps you can work through on your own to discover some of the features of Video Cloud.

This topic is a companion to the Introduction to Video Cloud on-demand training course. The hands-on exercises in that training are based upon the steps in this document. It is recommended to watch that training and then use this document so you can complete the hands-on steps on your own.

Prerequisites

  • A Video Cloud account - you can sign up for a trial account here.
  • You should have some sample videos to can use or you can download some sample videos

Note: The steps and screen shots in this topic use the sample videos that are provided.

Outline

This topic will go through a basic video publish process for both a single video and for a playlist. The following topics are covered:

Uploading Videos to Video Cloud

Before proceeding, you should have some sample videos you can use or download the sample videos.

Login to your Video Cloud account

  1. In a browser window, navigate to https://studio.brightcove.com.
  2. Enter your credentials and click Sign In.

Upload local videos to Video Cloud

  1. Click Upload to open the Upload module.
  2. In the Upload module, select an ingest profile.
  3. Click Browse for Videos and browse and select your videos or all of the sample videos that were provided.
  4. The page will display all the videos and the upload progress.

    While uploads are in a processing state, do not close or move away from the browser window. Doing so may cause an incomplete upload.

    When the upload is complete, a Processing Complete status will display. This indicates the processing has completed and it is safe to navigate from the Upload module.

    Note: It is possible to click the Edit button next to the filename to edit some of the video metadata. Adding video metadata is covered in the next Quick Start topic.

Upload remote video to Video Cloud

  1. In the Upload module, click Enter URL.
  2. Enter the following URL to a file which is hosted on an Amazon S3 account.

  3. Click Process Video to begin the upload.

(Optional) Upload videos using mobile device

  1. Using a mobile device, open Video Cloud Studio at https://studio.brightcove.com.
  2. Open the Upload module.
  3. Select an ingest profile.
  4. Click Browse for Videos. The camera roll application on the device should open.
  5. Select a video to upload. The upload will begin and the upload progress will be displayed.

Editing Video Properties

In this task you will edit video properties.

  1. In Video Cloud Studio, click Media to open the Media module.
  2. Click on the title for the Brown Pelican video, locate the Video Information section and then click Edit. Set the following properties:
    • Short Description: Pelican on the rocks
    • Tags: birds

    Click Save when done and then click Back to Videos to return to the list of videos.

  3. Click on the title for the http://learning-services-media.brightcove.com/vc-quick-start/oystercatcher.mp4 video, locate the Video Information section and then click Edit. Set the following properties:
    • Name: Oystercatcher
    • Short Description: Oystercatcher on the beach
    • Tags: birds

    Click Save when done and then click Back to Videos to return to the list of videos.

  4. Edit both the Chickadee and the Woodpecker videos. Tag the videos with birds.

  5. Confirm the updated videos appear as follows.
  6. (Optional) Edit some of the animal videos and tag the videos with animals.

Creating and styling a player

In this task you will create and style a player.

Creating a new player

  1. In Video Cloud Studio, click Players to open the Players module.
  2. Click New Player.
  3. Enter Custom Player for the name and click Save.

Styling the player

  1. Click the Custom Player link to open the player properties.
  2. Confirm the Player Type is Single Video.
  3. Click Styling in the left navigation menu.
  4. Check Show title and description.
  5. Select a Play Button Shape and Play Button Position.
  6. Click the Main color selector and set the color to a shade of red.
  7. Confirm that the color changes are reflected in the preview player.
  8. Click Publish & Embed > Publish Changes to publish the changes.

Publishing a video to the web

In this task you will publish a video to the web.

Publishing a single video

  1. In Video Cloud Studio, click Media to open the Media module.
  2. Click the check box next to the Brown Pelican video and then click Publish and Embed > Web Player.

    Note: For information on the other publishing options, see the corresponding document:

     

  3. Confirm that the Publishing dialog opens.
  4. In the Select Player dropdown list select Custom Player. This player was created in an earlier section.

    Note: The Brightcove Default Player is created by default in all Video Cloud accounts.

  5. Click the URL below the preview player to open it in a new browser tab. Confirm that the video appears and can be played.

    Note: Click Shorten to generate a shortened URL.

  6. (Optional) Email the URL to your mobile device. Click on the link and confirm that the video plays on your mobile device.

Creating playlists

In this task you will create a manual and smart playlist.

Creating a Manual playlist

  1. In Video Cloud Studio, click Media to open the Media module.
  2. In the side navigation panel, click the Create Playlist link. The New Playlist dialog will open.
  3. Set the Playlist type to Manual.
  4. Set the Playlist Name to Favorites.
  5. Check Show Playlist in Sidebar to have the playlist appear in the sidebar.
  6. Click Save.

Adding videos to the Manual playlist

  1. Click All Videos in the side navigation panel to display all the videos in the account.
  2. Click the checkbox next to videos you want to add to the playlist.
  3. Click Add To > Add To Playlist.
  4. Select the Favorites playlist and then click Add.
  5. Click the Favorites playlist in the side navigation panel and confirm the videos have been added to the playlist.
  6. Rearrange the order of the videos by clicking on a row and dragging it to a new position in the list.

Creating a Smart playlist

  1. In the side navigation panel, click the Create Playlist link.
  2. Set the Playlist type to Smart.
  3. Set the Playlist Name to Birds.
  4. Check Show Playlist in Sidebar to have the playlist appear in the sidebar.
  5. Set the Tags field to contains one or more and enter birds for the tag.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Click the Birds playlist in the side navigation panel and confirm the bird videos have been added to the playlist.

Publishing a playlist

In this task you will create a new player, edit player settings to support playlists and then publish a playlist.

Editing player settings to support playlists

Note: If you select the Responsive sizing option, the Standard (iframe) code works well and both the player and playlist are responsive. If you use the Advanced (in-page embed) code, the player will be responsive, but the playlist will not.

  1. In Video Cloud Studio, click Players to open the Players module.
  2. Click New Player. Name the player Playlist Player and then click Save.
  3. Locate the Playlist Player and click on the player name to open the player properties.
  4. Select a Player Type of Playlist.
  5. Set the Aspect Ratio to16:9.
  6. Set the Player Dimensions to a Width of 640.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Click Styling in the left navigation menu.
  9. Click the Playlist Type of Playlist (Vertical).
  10. Click Playback in the left navigation menu.
  11. Check Play video when selected.
  12. Check Continuous play mode.
  13. Click Publish & Embed > Publish Changes to publish the changes to the player.

Publishing a playlist

  1. Click Media to open the Media module.
  2. Click All Playlists in the side navigation panel to display all the playlists.
  3. Click the checkbox next to the Birds playlist.
  4. Click Publish and Embed > Web Player.
  5. Select the Playlist Player.
  6. Click on the URL link. The player will open in a new browser tab. Confirm that the playlist player appears and that the videos in the playlist can be played.
  7. (Optional) Email the player URL to your mobile device. Click on the link and confirm that playlist player appears and that the videos in the playlist can be played.
