You can use the Brightcove Studio to generate, view, and export reports about the performance of your Brightcove media.
Note that to access the Reports page, you must be a Brightcove Studio user with the Admin role.

To access the Reports page:

  1. Sign in to the Brightcove Studio.
  2. Click the Reports link at the top right, under the navigation bar.

In this release of Brightcove, you can generate the following reports and display them in the Studio:

  • Summary. Total media loads (with subtotals for player loads and video plays) and total megabytes downloaded (with subtotals for video and non-video bandwidth).
  • Video plays. The number of play starts for each video in your account. A video play is captured any time a video starts—whether by a user click, auto-start on player load, or when the next video plays automatically in a continuous playlist. Each video played counts as 1 play, regardless of whether the viewer paused and resumed play.
  • Video bandwidth. The video bandwidth used by each video in your account. The video bandwidth reported does not include non-video bandwidth usage, and therefore may differ from the bandwidth reported on your Brightcove invoice. Non-video bandwidth for your account is broken out in the Summary report.
  • Player loads. The number of times each player in your account has been loaded.
  • Player video plays. The number of play starts for each player in your account.
  • Player bandwidth. The bandwidth used by each player in your account.

In addition, you can download reports in CSV format.

A different set of data about your Brightcove media performance is available in the Analytics module.

Reporting data may be delayed by up to 48 hours. As a result, your report may cover fewer days than you might expect. For example, a report for the last 30 days may actually only include date for 28 or 29 days, since data for the most recent day or two may not be available. By default, reporting data is tracked in PST (Pacific Standard Time). Even when daylight savings time is in effect, the data is still tracked and displayed in PST (not PDT). However, you can change your account's default time zone for reporting in the Brightcove Studio's Account Settings > Analytics page. Note that this time zone setting affects reports on the Reports page and does not affect data available in the Analytics module.

Generating a report

To generate a report on the Brightcove Studio Reports page:

  1. Select the type of report you want to generate.
  2. Select the time range you want your report to cover. You can use the drop-down list to select a time range, or use the calendar buttons to select a start and end date. Be aware that because of the delay in recent reporting data, your report may not cover the full range of days you selected. For example, if you select "Last 30 days", your report will actually cover 28 or 29 days, since data for the most recent day or two will not yet be available.
  3. Click Go to generate the report.

Generating reports can take a considerable amount of time, depending largely on the length of the covered time range and the amount of data required.

Report views

The Reports page offers two views of each Videos or Players report: Top 10 or All Videos. For the Video Plays report, the Top 10 view presents a pie chart showing top 10 videos, sorted by number of plays, compared to all other videos in the account. It also shows a list of the Top 10 videos, with their corresponding number of plays, and the total number of video plays in the account for the selected date range:

The All Videos view presents a datagrid view of all videos in the account, sorted by the number of plays. The datagrid displays the following data for each video: Video Name, Video ID, number of plays, and bandwidth usage (in megabytes), along with the total number of plays and total bandwidth used.

For the Video Bandwidth report, the Top 10 view presents a pie chart showing top 10 videos, sorted by bandwidth used, compared to all other videos in the account. It also shows a list of the Top 10 videos, with their corresponding amount of bandwidth, and the total amount of video bandwidth used by the account for the selected date range. The All Videos view of the Video Bandwidth report presents a datagrid view of all videos in the account, sorted by bandwidth used. The datagrid displays the following data for each video: Video Name, Video ID, number of plays, and bandwidth usage (in megabytes), along with the total number of plays and total bandwidth used.

Downloading reports

You can download a report in CSV (comma-separated value) format, which you can then open in a spreadsheet program. To download a report:

  1. Generate the report
  2. Click Download report.
  3. Select either Videos, Videos & Players, or Players.

The Videos report in CSV format includes the following columns:

  • Video Name
  • Video ID
  • Video Ref ID
  • # Video Plays
  • # MBs Downloaded
  • # Minutes Downloaded
  • Video Publish Date
  • Video state (inactive/active/deleted)

The Videos & Players report in CSV format groups information by player and by video. Each row in the report displays the following columns for each unique video-player combination:

  • Video Name
  • Video ID
  • Video Ref ID
  • Player Name
  • Player ID
  • # Video Plays
  • # of MB Downloaded
  • # Minutes Downloaded
  • Video state (inactive/active/deleted)

The Players report in CSV format includes the following columns:

  • Player Name
  • Player ID
  • # of Player Loads
  • # of Title Plays
  • # of MB Downloaded
  • # of Minutes Downloaded

Changing delimiter conventions

Reports in CSV format use the Anglophone convention for delimiters: comma to separate thousands and dot to separate decimals. To learn how to import CSV files in Microsoft Excel using the opposite convention (used in Germany and many other countries), read Converting Numerical Delimiters in Excel.
