You can use Brightcove's geo-filtering feature to restrict access to content in a player based on the viewer's geographic location. For example, if a player includes content that, for legal reasons, cannot be distributed outside the U.S. and Canada, you can set geo-filtering on your player to keep viewers outside of the approved countries from accessing that content.

The ability to use geo-filtering to restrict players to the U.S., U.K., or Canada is available to all Brightcove accounts for free. Standard IP-address based filtering technology is employed for this purpose. For more information, see Basic geo-filtering for players.

Brightcove Pro or Enterprise publishers may also elect to use advanced Quova geo-filtering, for an additional fee. They can also use geo-filtering to restrict access to videos. Contact Brightcove if you want to upgrade your account to include Quova geo-filtering. Features of Quova geo-filtering include:

  • Filtering technology is facilitated by Quova, a leading provider of geographic monitoring services.
  • Quova makes daily updates to the IP address database used to filter content, resulting in more accurate geo-filtering.
  • The following countries are currently supported: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States. In the future, we plan to expand this list to include all of the 242 countries and regions defined by ISO-3166.
  • Advanced geo-filtering can be applied to individual videos or to players.

Geo-filtering can be either exclusive or inclusive of the list of countries you select. This means that you can specify countries that should have access to the player in question (inclusive). Alternatively, you can specify countries that should not have access to the player in question (exclusive). Basic geo-filtering allows you to use inclusive filtering only — you can restrict viewing to the countries you pick. Advanced geo-filtering permits both inclusive and exclusive geo-filtering. You can configure this option when you set up geographic filters.

Basic geo-filtering for players

You can use the Publishing module to set basic geo-filtering on the player level, restricting the player to one or more of the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom. Basic geo-filtering uses IP-address based filtering. To use basic geo-filtering:

  1. In the Publishing module, select the player and click Settings.
  2. Under Geographic Filtering, select Restrict player to the following countries and select the countries in which you want your player to be available.

  3. Click Save Changes.

Quova geo-filtering for players

If Quova geo-filtering is enabled for your Brightcove Premium account, you can set Quova geo-filtering on the player level, using the Publishing module, or on the video level, using the Media module. In addition, you can use geo-filtering either to restrict your player to one or more specified countries, or to allow your player to work everywhere except one or more specified, excluded countries.

To set Quova geo-filtering for a player:

  1. In the Publishing module, select the player and click Settings.
  2. Under Geographic Filtering, select Exclude the following and select the countries in which you want your player to be blocked, or else select Include the following and select the countries in which you want your player to be available. In this release, you can include or exclude the following countries:
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States.

  3. Click Save Changes.
