The Edit Settings dialog of the Publishing module is where you can set and modify aspects of your players, including name, access or API restrictions, hosting options, geo-filtering, search options, description, and video promotion tools. This topic includes:

Modifying player settings

To configure or edit the settings of a player:

  1. In the Publishing module, select a player.
  2. Click Settings in the action toolbar. Or, double-click on the player in the datagrid. The Edit Settings dialog opens.
  3. Change the settings you want to apply to the player. Note how the Edit Settings dialog presents separate tabs (such as Global, Video Player, and Video List). Each tab presents edit options that are relevant to different components of the player. Read more about the settings you can modify.
  4. Click Save Changes to apply the updated settings to your player.

Player settings groups

The Edit Settings dialog presents editing options on separate tabs, based on the major components of the selected player. For example, the tabbed navigation templates present five tabs:

Edit Player Settings

Since the Video Player doesn't have a video list component, there's no Video List tab for it in the Edit Settings dialog.

Global tab settings

The Global tab enables modifying the following settings for the selected player:

Name

A name you use to identify the player. This should be a clear, descriptive name for your player to help users identify it. The name can have up to 80 characters, including blank spaces. The player name is publicly viewable in public search engines and in email sharing, unless one or more of the promotional features have been explicitly turned off, as described under Viral Promotion.

Description

A description of the player of up to 256 characters, including blank spaces. The description is publicly viewable in public search engines or in email sharing, unless you have turned off these promotional features.

Hosting Options

Host on a Brightcove URL: Select this option to make your player available without having to specify a particular web address.

Host on your URL: Provide the URL of the page where you will later copy and paste the publishing code for the player. Be sure to include either http:// or https://. The Edit Settings dialog performs some checking for validity on URLs you enter and you will not be able to save a URL that doesn't pass the validation check.

Web Settings

Enable ActionScript/JavaScript APIs: Enable developer access to the player's data (videos) and control of video playback by selecting this checkbox to enable API interaction with the player.

Restrict to your web domain: Enter one or more complete URLs (such as http://example.com) to restrict your player's availability to these particular domains. Leave out the "www" in the URL for more flexible restriction. Be sure to include either http:// or https://. The Edit Settings dialog performs some checking for validity on URLs you enter and you will not be able to save a URL that doesn't pass the validation check.

Domain Restriction

Geographic Filtering

Geographic filtering enables you to restrict this player to particular countries, or block the player from particular countries. For more information, see Geo-filtering.

Language option settings

On the Language Options tab, you can choose the language used for the labels on your player. You can select one of the following languages:

  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Spanish

The email template used with the "Email this" feature will match the player language you choose.

By selecting Other and providing the URL of a label set file that you create, your player's labels can be customized to use other languages. See Localizing Players for more information. Note, however, that if you select Other, the email template used with the "Email this" feature will be in English. If that's not what you want, you can disable the "Email this" feature and rely on the "Get link" feature instead.

Plug-in settings

On the Plug-ins tab, you can enter the URL of one or more SWFs to be loaded into the player.

Plug-in tab

A plug-in SWF enables you to customize a player without creating a custom player template. For example, plug-in SWFs can be used to customize player controls or to record and send player behavior information for web analytics purposes. For more information, see Developing an Analytics SWF.

Video Player settings

The Video Player tab enables modifying the following settings for the selected player:

Edit Settings - Video Player

Full Screen

By default, players include a full screen button that viewers can use to expand the player to fill their whole screen.

You can disable this behavior by selecting Prevent full screen functionality.

Auto Play

By default, a player loads, but does not begin to play its first video until the viewer clicks the play button. If you want instead for the player to start play immediately when it loads, select Automatically play video on page load.

Brightcove Branding

By default, Brightcove players include a Brightcove icon next to the menu button.

Select Remove Brightcove icon to remove the icon, while preserving the existing spacing of the menu bar at the bottom of the player. Note: This option is not available for Brightcove Express publishers with the $99 plan. Read about upgrading your Brightcove Express account.

Player-Level Bumpers

A bumper is a short video clip (typically just a few seconds long) that plays when a player loads or before a video plays. Bumpers are often used for branding. You can set bumpers at the video level or at the player level. Read more about bumpers.

  • If you select Display a player-level bumper, the player runs a bumper when it loads.
  • If you select Display all video-level bumpers, the player runs any bumpers set for that video. Read about setting bumpers for a video.

You can upload a new bumper or select an existing bumper file to use as a bumper for this player.

Overlay Menu

By default, when a player loads, when a video is paused, and when playback is complete, a Brightcove player uses the video display to show an overlay menu that viewers can use to resume play, email the video link, or get a link to the player.

Select Disable overlay menu to remove this overlay menu from your player.

Viral Promotion Tools

By default, Brightcove players include buttons that viewers can use to spread the player virally:

  • Email this. Appears in the player control bar, button menu, and overlay menu.
  • Get link. Appears in the player control bar, button menu, and overlay menu.
  • Blog this & Get code. Appears in the player control bar and button menu.

These options enable you to remove the email this button, the get link button, or the get code buttons.

Additional Videos

If you choose the Video info option from the Video End Screen options, the Additional Videos options control whether the player displays a scrolling list, with thumbnails, of:

  • Related videos, based on matching the name, short description, and tags of videos in your account.
  • Most viewed videos, based on total views ever.
  • Newest videos, based on the date most recently activated.

With each option, the list consists of not more than 12 videos.

Video End Screen

The Video End Screen options control the player behavior when a video completes its playback or when a viewer clicks the MENU button in the player. You can choose one of the following options:

  • Video info (includes additional videos). Display the video's name, short description, and related link. If you have enabled one or more of the Additional Videos options, display links to those options as well.
  • Email video to a friend. Display a form the viewer can use to email a link to the video.
  • Link to video. Display a form the viewer can use to copy a link to the video.
  • Add video to website or blog. Display a form the viewer can use to copy code that will embed the video in a website or blog.

  • Video still (overlay menu displays if enabled). Display the video still for the video. If you have enabled the overlay menu, it displays over the video still.

Video List settings

The Video List tab displays in the Edit Settings dialog only if the selected player has a video list component. On the Video List tab, you can disable auto advance for the selected player. When auto advance is enabled (the default setting), then the player automatically begins to play the next video once the previous video has completed.
