You can create and edit custom fields using the Account Settings > Video Fields page in the Brightcove Studio.

Custom Fields are available only to Brightcove Pro and Enterprise customers. If you are interested in upgrading your Brightcove account, please contact Brightcove for more information.

To learn more about what custom fields are and how to use them, read Setting Up Custom Metadata.

Accessing the Video Fields Page

To access the Video Fields page in the Brightcove Studio, click Account Settings in the upper right of the Studio Home page, then click Video Fields. Only Administrator users can access this area.

Video Fields link

The Video Fields page displays all your existing custom metadata fields. It also displays all the standard Brightcove video metadata fields; this is to help you avoid creating custom metadata fields when a standard metadata field that can do the job already exists.

Adding a Custom Metadata Field

To add a custom metadata field to your videos:

  1. Click Add Custom Fields.
    Adding a field
  2. Enter a display name for your field. This will appear as the label for the field in the Media module. We automatically create an internal name for the field, based on the display name. The internal name is the name for the field that will be used in the Brightcove APIs and in FTP batch provisioning. You can modify the internal name we create if you want to, but the internal name cannot include whitespace, double-byte characters or punctuation.
  3. Select a type for your field. A custom field can be text (string) or list.
  4. If your field type is list, enter the possible values for the field.
    • Any list can have no more than 150 possible string values.
    • Each string value in the list can be no more than 100 characters long.
When you have finished adding list values, click Save Changes.
  5. When you have finished setting up your fields, click the Save button at the bottom of the form.

Custom metadata fields you create are available immediately and will be visible in the Media module.

Be careful when you enter custom metadata field names and types; in this release of Brightcove, once you create a field, you need to contact Brightcove Customer Support to delete it.

Modifying List Values

You can edit the possible values for a list type custom metadata field. Click the list of values and either add new values or delete existing ones.

Exporting Custom Metadata Fields

You can export your custom metadata fields, so that you can keep a record of them outside of Brightcove. Click the Copy link to copy to your clipboard a tab-delimited list of your custom metadata fields, including the display name, internal name, type, and (for list type fields) values. You can then paste this information into a spreadsheet or text file.

Limitations

Using the Video Fields page in the Brightcove Studio, you can create and manage not more than 10 custom metadata fields for the videos in your Brightcove media library. If you find that you need more than 10 fields, click the Need more fields? link in the Video Fields page to contact Brightcove Customer Support with a request for more. Publishers are limited to a total of not more than 50 custom metadata fields.

Using Custom Metadata

Brightcove offers three different approaches to creating and updating videos, and you can use any of them to set and update custom metadata values for your videos:

Custom metadata is also available through the Player API:
